The Rheinish Missionaries in nearby Wupperthal established a shoe making facility in 1834 to employ local labour.

The factory continued to grow and in 1921 the Reverend Willy Strassberger took over the business from his father in law Gustav Smolke.

In 1954 the whole operation moved to Clanwilliam and continues to this day making handmade Strassberger "Veldskoen" making it the oldest shoe making company in South Africa
